This morning after reading a message from U S Senator Diane Feinstein about the shenanigans occurring on Capitol Hill, I was inspired to meditate on the book of Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament.
Edom, a prideful nation that showed indifference to Israel (God’s people), received a warning that it had been condemned and would be destroyed. The Lord says, “I will cut you down to size among the nations, Edom; you will be small and despised. You are proud because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. ‘Who can ever reach us way up here?’ you ask boastfully. Don’t fool yourselves! Though you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down. I, the LORD, have spoken!” (Obadiah 2-4).
After describing many wrongs Edom committed against their own close relatives (Edomites and Israelites were descendants of twin brothers Esau and Jacob), God said, “The day is near when I, the Lord, will judge the godless nations! As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you. All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads.” (Obadiah 15).
I’m so glad that we have a God who sits high and looks low and nothing escapes his notice. Not only does he see what’s happening on Capitol and everywhere else, he also acts to right the wrongs at his appointed time.
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18).
